Bed Sizes

How come no one ever knows their bed sizes? Matching the dimensions of fitted sheets with that of your bed is necessary if you care a lot about your bed looks. Basically, all it takes to make matching fitted sheets with any bed seem like second nature to you is learning to identify and measure the dimensions of the mattress as well as knowledge of some standard bed measurements. The following are things you should consider when attempting to match a fitted sheet with your bed.

Bed Dimensions

When reading dimensions, learn to identify which number goes with which dimension. Usually, the dimensions of a bed are expressed as width by length by depth (height or thickness) although such ordering of dimensions may vary in other applications. Regardless, if you come across any bed measurements, the length should always be the one with the biggest number, followed by width and then by depth.

Bed Sizes UK:

Single beds in the United Kingdom have a standard measurement of 3 ft. x 6 ft. which should be perfect for a 76 x 200 x 20 (in cm.) fitted sheet. While for a longer version of the same size bed (3 ft. x 6.6 ft.), a slightly longer bed sheet which has dimensions of 90 x 200 x 20 (in cm.) would be perfect. A UK small double size mattress of 4 ft. x 6.3 ft. should be matched with a 120 x 190 x 20 (in cm.) bed sheet while the standard double size mattress measuring about 4.4 ft. x 6.2 ft. should be fitted with sheets measuring 135 x 190 x 20 (in cm.).

On the other hand, a UK king size mattress measuring 150 x 200 (in cm.) should be matched with a 150 x 200 x 20 (in cm.) bed sheet while a 200 x 20 (in cm.) bed sheet would be a perfect fit for a Euro King IKEA size. Lastly, a UK super king size mattress should be matched with a bed sheet measuring 183 x 200 x 20 (in cm.) or a bed sheet with the same dimensions for length and width but a slightly increased depth of 26 cm. for a thicker version of the same mattress.

Bed Sizes for US beds and mattresses:

The US also has different standards for the sizes of its beds. A US twin size bed requires a 39 x 76 x 8 (in in.) bed sheet. A US full size bed should be matched with a bed sheet which has dimensions of 54 x 76 x 8 (in in.) whereas a US queen size mattress should be matched with a 60 x 80 x 8 (in in.) bed sheet.

A US eastern king size bed on the other hand, will require a 76 x 80 x 8 (in in.) fitted sheet while a California king size mattress should be matched with a 73 x 85 x 8 (in in.) bed sheet which is also available in 10, 12, 14 and 16 (in in.) depth variants for thicker California king size mattresses.

As some of these measurements may slightly vary from one manufacturer to another, matching fitted sheets with mattresses basing on size classification alone may yield an incompatible fit. Measuring the mattress and comparing its resulting dimensions with the measurements of the fitted sheets would be the surest way for you to match these two perfectly.

Now you should have a clearer idea of bed sizes before you go out and buy your new bed.
